Leftover Gravel, Sand, or Soil

What to Do With Leftover Gravel, Sand, or Soil

Finished your landscaping job and still have extra material? Don’t let it go to waste. Whether it’s gravel, sand, or soil, there are simple ways to put leftovers to good use—or store them safely until you need them.

1. Use It in Small Touch-Ups Around the Yard

Even small amounts can come in handy later. Here’s how:

  • Soil: Fill in low spots on the lawn or garden beds. Patch uneven areas near walkways or patios.
  • Sand: Level patio stones, pavers, or build a small base for a shed or firepit.
  • Gravel: Fix potholes in a gravel driveway, top up pathways, or add drainage under downspouts.

2. Build or Improve Drainage

Gravel and coarse sand help manage water.

  • Use gravel at the bottom of planters or raised beds to improve drainage.
  • Layer sand or gravel in low-lying spots that collect water.
  • Add to trenches behind retaining walls to keep water away.

3. Store It for Future Projects

If you expect to landscape again soon, save what’s left.

  • Use heavy-duty garden bags or sealable containers.
  • Keep soil and sand dry to prevent clumping or erosion.
  • Cover gravel with a tarp to stop weed growth and keep it clean.

Label your materials so you don’t forget what’s what.

4. Share or Donate Locally

You might not need the extra material—but someone else might.

  • Ask neighbours, friends, or local gardening groups.
  • Check community boards or local sharing apps.
  • Some urban farms or school gardens may accept clean soil or gravel.

5. Use It in Raised Beds or New Features

Building a new garden bed, sandbox, or walkway?

  • Use soil to start a raised bed (even partial soil can reduce the volume needed).
  • Sand can be used as a base layer under topsoil or mulch.
  • Gravel makes a great base for a compost bin, shed, or stepping stone path.

A Few Things to Avoid

  • Don’t dump it on public land. It’s illegal and can harm the environment.
  • Don’t mix materials. Keep gravel, sand, and soil separate to preserve their usefulness.
  • Don’t leave soil uncovered. It can blow away or get soaked.

Wrap-Up

Leftover materials don’t have to be a problem. With a little planning, they can help with small fixes, future projects, or someone else’s yard. If you find yourself short on volume next time, remember—we offer ½ yard and 1-yard bags, and free local delivery in Calgary.
